Happy National Gingerbread Cookie Day!
November 21, 2016
So where did the Gingerbread Man come from?
Gingerbread itself has its’ origins in 2000 BC Europe, where ginger was frequently used a medicinal spice, and was made from stale bread crumbs mixed with honey.
During the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth began making gingerbread with fresh flour instead of stale crumbs. She had them shaped into ‘men’ to represent various dignitaries, and the Gingerbread Man was born.
Baking guilds were responsible for all the baking in a community during the 16th and early 17th centuries. This was for a practical reason as the large open ovens were too much of a fire risk inside individual homes. Later in the 17th century however, the strict rules were lifted and private citizens were allowed to bake gingerbread themselves during the Christmas and Easter holiday seasons.
Gingerbread cookies are still considered a seasonal cookie favorite, and ours are the best! Sprinkled with powdered sugar and soft baked, our gourmet gingerbread cookies are just what you need to celebrate the cooler temps and your favorite holidays.
